Annexure 3: Postgraduate, First Degree and School level Studies

Bio-technology Scholarships: 15 bio-technology scholarships (a lump sum amount of Rs.15,000) are awarded from amongst the top 40 students in biology at the CBSE 10 + 2 level examinations to encourage them to take up bio-technology as a career. The awards are presented on the National Science day observed on 28 February year.

Combined Examination for Admission to Master’s Degree Programmes in Agricultural and Allied subjects New Delhi-110 Award of Junior Fellowships: The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (IAR) conducts anal-India test for the award of Junior Research Fellowships and admission to 25% of the seats in Master’s Degree programmes (including Veterinary Science and Animal Husbandry) in State Agricultural Research institute (IARI), Indian Veterinary Research Institute (IVRI), Central Institute of Fisheries Education (CIFE) and National Dairy Research Institute (NDRI). Students who opt to join universities or institutions other than those from where they have obtained their Bachelor’s degrees are awarded Junior Research Fellowships. The value of each fellowship is Rs.5,000.00 per month for graduates in veterinary science and Rs.3,600.00 per annum is also given. (See item (viii) in Chapter 9 – Admission Procedures).

Fellowships to Outstanding Artistes: The Fellowships (150 Senior Fellowships and 300 Junior Fellowships) are awarded by the Department of Culture in fields of literature, Indian Classical music, Indian Classical Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts, indigenous Folk and Traditional forms of Performing Arts. The Senior Fellows (40 years and above) are paid Rs.6,000 per month for two years while the value of the Junior Fellowships (age 25-40) is Rs.3,000 per month. GATE for Scholarships in Postgraduate Study in Engineering and Technology: Candidates qualifying in Graduate Aptitude Test in Engineering (GATE) are entitled to scholarships for undertaking Master-level studies in engineering and technology, archaeology and pharmacy (See Chapter 9-Admissions Procedures).

IISc young Fellowships for Toppers in PUC/12th Standard: Awarded to toppers (within top 20 ranks) for pursuing a research career in science. Candidates are required to join B.Sc. Integrated M.Sc. or an equivalent programme in any branch of science in nay college or university of their choice. Jawahar Novodaya Vidyalaya: The Vidyalaya (residential) offer higher qualify modern education free of cost to promising children. About 75% of the seats are reserved for students from rural areas. (See Chapter 9: Admission Procedures).

Kishore Vaigyanik Protshana: Fellowship awarded to (i) Science students who have obtained 75% marks in the aggregate in Class 10 and Class 10 + 2 examinations in science subjects and wish to continue studies in science stream, (ii) Engineering students who have passed the fires year examination in first division. Mahindra All-India Talent Scholarships: Awarded to students belonging to lower income group families with good scholastic records who have passed SSLC or HSC examination and had secured admission in government recognised polytechnic for Diploma Course. National Centre for Promotion of Employment to Disabled People (NCPEDP): has a scholarship shceme for disabled learners pursing postgraduate level studies Besides, Government of India also awards scholarship through State Directorates of Social Welfare.

National Renewable Energy Fellowships: Awarded by the Ministry of Non-Conventional Energy Resources for M.Tech. and Ph.D. programme in renewable energy resources. Candidates admitted in the following institutions which have set up Energy Study Centres only are eligible: IIT, New Delhi and Mumbai, JNTU, Hyderabad, Maulana Azad College of Technology (Bhopal 462007), Madurai Kamaraj University (Madurai-625021), Devi Ahilya Vishwavidyala (Takshadhila Campus) (Indore-452001), University of Pune, Jadavpur University (Calcutta-300032), REC TIRuchirapally-620015), IISc (Bangalore-560012), BITS (Pilani-330031) and College of Agricultural Engineering, Udaipur (Rajasthan agricultural University). Eligibility: Valid GATE score of 75% or B.Tech./M.SC. with a minimum of 65% marks in aggregate. Value of Fellowships. M.Tech. Rs.5,000 per month. Ph.D. (JRF) Rs.5,000 per month and Ph.D. (SRF) Rs.7,000 per month.

National Scholarships Scheme: Awarded for studies at undergraduate, postgraduate and diploma levels. The scheme for award of National Scholarships on merit was introduced in 1961-62 for higher studies in Arts, Science, Engineering, Medicine, agriculture, Law, Commerce, Education etc. in recognised educational institutions in India. The allocation is made by Government of India on the basis of data received form States and Uttar Pradesh Administrations. The Registrars of Universities and Secretaries of Education Boards furnish data in regard to the number of students who have appeared passed in various examinations in prescribed proforma by the end of September each year.

The awards are made on the basis of results following examinations: (i) School Leaving examination i.e. Matriculation, High School, Indian School Certificate, (ii) 12th class, PUC, Intermediate, (iii) First Degree examinations i.e. BA/B.Sc/B.Com (Pass/Hons) and First Degree professional examinations, i.e. B.Ed. and LLB. National Scholarships for Talented Children from Rural Areas for Secondary Stage Study: The objective of the scheme introduced in 1971-72 is to provide opportunities to school students from rural areas to pursue secondary stage education. The number of scholarships allocated is communicated to the State Governments and UT Administrations every year. Students studying in a school in community development block in class VI to VIII are eligible to compete for the scholarships.

Eligible students are required to appear in two stages of examinations: First Stage Examination is conducted by the State Govts and Uttar Pradesh Administrations. While the Second Stage, i.e. the final examination is conducted at the National level by NCERT. The final selection is made with the Community Development Block a Unit and top students in each block are awarded scholarships, Contact Address: District Inspectors of School and Directorate of Education of State Governments and UT Administrations.

National Talent Scholarship (Agriculture and Allied Subjects): The Indian Council of Agricultural Research (Krishi Anusandhan Bhavan, Pusa, New Delhi-110012) conducts every year an All-India Entrance Examination for Admission to undergraduate programmes in agricultural & allied subjects to fill up 15% of the total number of seats in State Agricultural Universities, Central Agricultural University, Imphal (Manipur) and all seats in the national Dairy Research Institute, Kurnal (Haryana). The Council awards a monthly scholarship of Rs.800.00 to candidates who opt to pursue studies in any State Agricultural University outside the State of their domicile. National Talent Search Awards: The purpose of the scheme is to identify brilliant students at the end of class X and give them financial assistance to enable them to get good education. The awardees studying in basic and social sciences are eligible to receive scholarships up to PhD level, while those studying medicine and engineering are eligible to receive scholarships up to second degree level. Students studying in Class X in recognised schools are eligible to appear at the State Level examination from the state in which the institution is located. The selection procedure consists of two stage examinations (a) State level Examination held during October-November every year and (b) National Level Examination held on the second Sunday of May every year. Rajiv Gandhi Science Talent Research Fellowships: Awarded for studies at graduate and postgraduate levels in specified branches of life Sciences, Chemical Sciences, Physical Science (Bangalore) or any other approved centres. Sahu Jain Trust: Scholarships for study in India in (1) technical trade courses including computer and information technology, (2) professional courses like engineering and medicine and (3) any other graduation and postgraduation courses. Scholarships for Post-Matric Studies in Hindi: Awarded to students from non-Hindi areas for undertaking studies at 10 + 2, BA, MA, M.Phil., M.Litt. and Ph.D. levels with Hindi. Contact Address: Directorate of Education, State Governments and UT administrations.

Scholarships for young Artists: The Department of Culture awards 400 scholarships of Rs.2,000 per month each to young artistes in different cultural fields (Indian Classical Music, Indian Classical Dance, Theatre, Visual Arts and Folk, Traditional and Indigenous arts. They are required to undergo advanced training on full-time bases for two years under a reputed guru or in an institution. TIFR Junior Scholarships in Biology and Biotechnology: Awarded to a few talented students holing B.Sc. degrees who are interested in a research career in Biology and Biotechnology. Scholarships are tenable for three years at the national Centre for Biological Research (NCBR) at the Tata institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR), the candidates may obtain an M.Sc. degree by research and papers.

TIFR Research Scholarship in Mathematics: Awarded to young students aspiring for a research career in mathematics at the School of Mathematics, Tata Institute of Fundamental Research (TIFR).
